Your Questions About Fishy Vaginal Odor

Maria asks…

I frequently get a fishy vaginal odor that is very embarrassing. What could this be and what can I do?

For the past few months, I have been getting a fishy vaginal odor on and off. It is extremely embarrassing and I don’t know what to do about it. I have never been sexually active, and I shower regularly. Does anyone have any suggestions of what this might be or what I can do to get rid of the problem? Only serious answers please!

admin answers:

It sounds as if you might have Bacterial Vaginosis. Especially since you mentioned the ‘fishy’ odor.

The is the most common vaginal infection – more so than a yeast infections.
You do not have to be sexually active to get this infection.
The Ph in the vagina gets out of balance and the bacteria organisms take over.
Perfumed soaps can cause this – improper wiping of the genital area can introduce bacteria from the anus into the vagina. Wipe from front to back.
And other times, this type of infection happens and the doctors can’t really find out the reasons some women get this infection.
Sometimes, this infection will clear up by itself but it usually takes a trip to the gynecoloist – they will take a sample of the vaginal secretions and if it is BV they will prescribe an antibiotic gel to be inserted into the vagina for about 5 days.

But your best bet would be to get a professional evaluation, because BV can cause future female problems if it is not treated.
Take Care.

Ruth asks…

I have bacterial infection(Vaginosis) so what does that mean for my boyfriend?

well since i just found out i have a bacterial infection( vaginosis) …
i heard my boyfriend can get it, so
does he have to get in to get antibiotics for it or what does he have to get and what would he say?
also what is it called, i heard my bacterial infection will give him a yeast infection? like what will it give him? im really confused..
& how long does it take for this to all clear up?
i just feel really really bad and i want to have all the information on it for him.
yes i told him
& no hes not leaving me for it
i am getting antibiotics but we have unprotected sex (im on birth control) so im concerned for him.

admin answers:

You have several questions there. First yes you can give it to your boyfriend, but more than likely sexual activity was the cause of the imbalance in your system. That is all BV really is, but having said that it is not that easy to get rid of. I would suggest you see your health care provider to get a proper diagnosis. They will take a swab and send it to a lab for testing.

You should abstain from relations until you have it under control. The doctor will likely prescribe meds, which may help alleviate the symptoms short term, but it will reoccur if you don’t take other measures to balance your body. Things like changing your eating habits, your personal hygiene, taking probiotics … There are a number of solutions.

Lizzie asks…

Will bacterial vaginosis go away on it’s own?

I think I may have bacterial vaginosis. I am on my 6th day of Monistat 7 and I still have some symptoms so I don’t think it was/is a yeast infection. I have NO health insurance so I can’t go to the doctor. I don’t have a planned parenting clinic in my area. We have a health department but the soonest appointment is in May 08!

My symptoms are now;

a not so fresh smell. Not sure how to descibe the smell. Sometimes it does smell a little fishy, but mostly just doesn’t smell good at all. I can smell it even through pants!

A white/clear discharge.

I did have itching, burning skin with it but the monistat cleared the itch and redness up.

I am a virgin so I know it’s not an STD.

Will this go away on it’s own or is there any at home treatments for bacterial vaginosis?

admin answers:

No, you need  to clear it up. Yeast infection is fungal. See a doctor. Use ivory when you are washing your genitals. Also don’t douche or use perfumes in that area it can cause problems.

Please see a doctor, don’t self diagnose.

Sharon asks…

Bacterial vaginosis question?

Is it possible for bacterial vaginosis to be in a persons system for a long period of time and even after treatments being attempted, it still remained. But is it possible for it to develop into Chlaymidia? My friend just got word from her doctor that while getting her pap for the BV that won’t go away, she now is positive for Chlaymidia. Her husband just came home from Iraq and she wasn’t with anyone else. He just got tested, and he was negative!! Is there any explanation to this? Please only serious answers! Keep the funny ones to yourself!! She is really distraught about this and her husband is also curious as to how this happened. They were both tested when they got married for STD’s and both were clean…aside from the BV.

admin answers:

I’d get a second opinion

I do know that chlaymidia can remain undected for a good long while – there aren’t necessarily any systems so it is entirely possible that the first test missed it. It’s also odd that if she has chlaymidia she hasn’t passed it on to her husband.

Sandy asks…

I hate going to the doctors, but believe I have an infection..?

I’m 98% positive I’ve got Bacterial Vaginosis. Have had it once before awhile back, and it seems I’ve got all the same symptoms again. I was wondering if anyone knew of home remedies or helpful treatments I can buy offline to help me. I hate the doctors! And would love if I was able to save some money by not going, since I don’t have insurance. If in the worst case I have to go, would Planned Parenthood be able to diagnose and help me get the treatment?

admin answers:

Why don’t you call your doctor, tell them you are experiencing the exact same symptoms and really dislike hospital experiences, and see if he is willing to fax a prescription to your pharmacy. Although be warned the antibiotic he will likely prescribe will only treat the symptoms and in a short time they will reoccur. Go to a Naturopath and describe everything as you have done here – there are remedies that will cure it.

Your Questions About Can Bv Cause Sores

Sandy asks…

Could it be Bacterial Vaginosis?

I have a milky white discharge with barely any odor, itching, and a sore spot. Ive been checked for Herpes recently and it was negative. There isnt an actual sore, just a spot thats very sensitive to the touch. The discharge looks like BV without the odor, but the itching feels like a yeast infection. Cant get to the doc til Monday, can anyone help? Can BV cause sores? Or is it something worse? I have had unprotected sex twice in the last 2 weeks.

admin answers:

I would go to a clinic and have them do an exam. They will swab you, and check out the contents of the swab under a microscope. They can tell you in 5 minutes if you have BV and/or yeast infection. They can also take a look at the sore spot you are concerned about.

Lisa asks…

How to endure long sex sessions?

Ladies… I need some suggestions on how to endure long sex sessions. I don’t much like lube, some cause yeast infections for me or BV. I do self lubricate but after 45 mins or so of fast friction I start to get sore since most of my lubrication is gone.
This question is rooted from a previous question about cymbalta side effects. My boyfriend just started taking the drug and his sex drive has improved but he’s having trouble cumming which is making sex long and he is eager to cum and he gets a bit rambunctious and doesn’t give up until I tell him I can‘t take anymore. I want to try to be able to keep at it a bit longer. I’ll attach the previous question. Thanks for your suggestions!

Cymbalta… Could this be a side effect?
My boyfriend has just started taking cymbalta… Well, his sex drive is better than it was when he was on the previous medication but now he just keeps on going for hours and multiple times without cumming. Is this a common side effect?

admin answers:

Maybe you need to take oral breaks if you know what i mean

Have any of you had bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy & did everything turn out to be ok?

I’m 5 weeks pregnant and I’m positive I have bacterial vaginosis back for the 5th time. I read online if not treated it can cause miscarriages or even preterm labor…I guess most doctors dont treat this until the second trimester..Im really worried about waiting & I dont want to take the antibiotics & that cause birth defects. Has anyone else out there gone through this?

admin answers:

Bacterial Vaginosis by itself is not serious, but it can lead to complications during pregnancy. Please visit your doctor that is the first step. He/She will do a swab and a culture to determine what is going on. Don’t self diagnose. There are a number of natural remedies that you can safely take, like garlic and yogurt. You can also see a Naturopathic Doctor for herbal treatments.

Your Questions About Bv And Men

Sandra asks…

Can men get BV and what medication is used to cure it in men?

Everytime my boyfriend and I have sex I get BV 1-2 days later and end up going to my clinic. I get treated with metronidazole for a week and symptoms go away. But this happens every single time my boyfriend and I have sex and it’s getting annoying. He went to get checked but they asked if he had any symptoms and said he didn’t so they cant give him medication. What kind of medication can he get to get this treated because I’m scared to have sex now. I don’t know what to do..I feel like these clinicians dont know S**!

admin answers:

Here is a link to that at the CDC…

Betty asks…

can men get bv please sum body help me?

i dont wanna take my meds and have sex with him again and get it all over again am i makin sense here

admin answers:

If you’re talking about bacterial vaginosis, then yes, your boyfriend / husband / lover can get it and you can keep passing it back and forth. Go to the gyno and get meds for yourself. Also ask what meds your boy should be taking. He’ll then go to his doctor (he can go to a primary or a urologist) and they will give him some medicine. He might have to have a culture done to verify that he does have it but most of the time, men are treated for this infection.

Mandy asks…

Can men pass BV back to a woman?

I have recurring BV (bacterial vaginitis), I’ve been having this problem most of my adult life and it’s very frustrating.. I want to cry everytime i have it b/c it’s embarrassing, and it makes me feel less of a woman.. Anyways, i’ve been w/my boyfriend for over 1 yr, totally monogamous.. I, like always, keep getting BV.. I take the meds and it goes away, then we start having sex and i get it again.. This time it was within a week, sometimes it takes longer to get back.. but I’m wondering if he could carry the bacteria or something?? My Dr says no its only a woman thing, but I’ve heard different.. I don’t know what to think.. And if i tell him he needs to be treated I don’t want him to think I’m telling him he has something like an STD.. he will think I’m gross or something.. Ugh.. if anyone has any insight as to how to get rid of this forever i would love the info..

I have tried yogurt everyday, suppositories, supplements, changed my diet, never take baths only showers, cotton undies… I have good hygiene too I’m not dirty.. i just don’t know what to do.. I’m going to have a melt down soon if I don’t figure this out.. nothing keeps it away for good, it always returns..

Thanks

admin answers:

Yes. I had the same problem back in college. I kept getting BV infections and would take the antibiotics. As soon as my partner and I had unprotected sex, I would get it again. Only when both he and I took the meds did it go away for good. To make sure we used condoms for almost 2 months after treatment to get my vagina back to a normal ph balance.

Your Questions About Vaginal Discharge

Helen asks…

Vaginal Discharge?

I have had vaginal discharge for a few monthes now. Are there any other things to do besides asking my mom to buy liners? Like to cover my underwear. My discharge is normal clearish and somtimes thick and sometimes thing so nothing is wrong I just want to know if there are other ways besides liners to “protect” my underwear.

admin answers:

A continuous discharge is not good. I would suggest you see your doctor to discover what is going on. Panty liners may make you feel more comfortable but if there is an infection or something more serious you need to be treated.

Linda asks…

Vaginal discharge?

I have a question about vaginal discharge if anyone can answer for me. I’ve been having it ever since I’m about 14 years old, a short time after I have my period. Im now 31 and I am still having it, but don’t know the reason why. I had checked w/ my OBGYN to see if anything’s wrong w/ me, but they said everything is fine. The discharge comes everyday and it is really really bothersome. I had tried from chinese herbs to medicine from the OBGYBN (vaginal insertion), but I still be having it. If anyone can give me some suggestion or feedback on what I should do, I’ll be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

admin answers:

If the doc said its normal it probably is…some women just produce a lot more than others and I dont think there is anything you can do to change that. But you could wear panty liners to be more comfortable. Did you doctor do a culture swab? You need to be sure it is clear.

Laura asks…

vaginal discharge?

vaginal discharge?
the discharge is sometimes a light greenish color. and sometimes it looks like cottage cheese. it has a foul smell. it comes and goes. and i’ve been experiencing this for some months now. i’ve postponed looking into this any earlier, because frankly i’m scared of going to a doctor. i have only had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend of 2 years, and he claims i was his first too. so could this be an std or maybe just an infection?? do i just need to shower more than once a day? are there any solutions or over the counter meds? please help. i’m totally terrified.
F#CK!!! so if it is gonorrhea, can i be cured? or is it long term? this also means he lied to me, doesn’t it? :(

admin answers:

I know you’re scared, but you need to go to the doctor. You most likely need an antibiotic for whatever is going on.

Don’t freak out by some of the other answers, you may just have a bacterial vaginitis infection or a yeast infection. Either way, you need to have a pelvic exam to see what’s going on.

You shouldn’t let an infection go on and on, it can lead to long term problems, especially if it may be something sexually transmitted.

Good Luck.

Sandra asks…

How did you overcome recurring Bacterial Vaginosis?

What strength did you use? 35% or
3% Also did you dilute it with water?

admin answers:

Doctors keep subscribing the same medicines over and over. Obviously flagyl(generic) doesn’t work for everyone. It seems to be their only answer. Avoidance of risk factors is important – no bubble baths, no scented douches, sexual activity with a very acidic partner, always wash new undergarmets. Pro-active you can use yogurt to increase your bodies ph balance, you can also douche with it

Susan asks…

How did you overcome recurring bacterial vaginosis?

admin answers:

BV is caused by a Ph imbalance. You need to rebalance your system … see above.

Mandy asks…

How can one overcome recurring bacterial vaginosis?

admin answers:

By having your doctor *thoroughly* examine you, take a culture (probably a swab) or your vagina to figure the bacteria causing the infection, then start an antibiotic regimen based on the results of that tests. There are most likely a fair number of specific organisms that can cause such an infection — in many cases an antibiotic may not have been taken for a long enough length of time or the bacteria may have been out of the spectrum the antibiotic was supposed to treat. If treated many times over and over the bacteria may have become resistant and a different treatment tried. Often it is a bacterial vaginosis problem that does not respond to antibiotics. You need to rebalance the ph in your system – through a change in diet, hygiene factors and other natural remedies like yogurt and/or garlic douches.

I’m not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be — but discuss this with your doctor and see what they say. You may end up for a few days in the hospital with an IV antibiotic or the doc may simply try a different med. Hopefully a different med will solve things.

What is the best organic feminine wash out there?

I have been trying to find an organic feminine wash out there and haven’t found any yet. I found DivaWash and Faith in Nature Feminine Wash but nothing else. And I heard that DivaWash can be too strong sometimes for women down there. So what other options are there? And if you don’t like using harmful chemicals in the nether region what method do you use? I don’t want to use any more feminine washes with harmful chemicals anymore.
Thanks!!!!

After doing a little research, I would say Faith in Nature’s Feminine Wash is the best. It’s great for sensitive skin, it’s extra gentle, and has aloe.

Laura asks…

what is a vaginal bacterial infection?

I went to the doctor and he told me I had a bacterial infection and he gave me some medicine to take care of it. He gave me a short summary of what it was but can anyone give me some information about it?

admin answers:

It is exactly what it says it is. A vaginal bacterial infection. The vagina is warm and moist and basically an optimal place for many types of bacteria to breed. It even has the correct pH, the bacteria must have gotten…in there and multiplied. As they colonize they create the symptoms whatever they were that brought you to go to the doctor. Your doctor most likely gave you either a topical (on the skin) or oral (swallowable) antibiotic. Which is a drug that kills bacteria.

Lisa asks…

Can going OFF birth control pills cause a yeast or bacterial vaginal infection?

I know going ON them does for some women, but can stopping birth control pills (after taking them for many years) cause an infection?

admin answers:

Not that I am aware of, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

In the mean time here’s the link to a site that might help you find even more information. The link is at: http://forums.obgyn.net/womens-health

Susan asks…

Can this cause vaginal bacterial infection?

I know it’s probably a stupid question but I’ve always thought that your vagina cleanses itself and flushes all the bad stuff out.

Anyways I was stuck at the beach all day with sand in my bikini bottom and I tried to get a lot of it out but beach bathrooms are so nasty and there’s no sinks. Can’t really wash yourself up, so now ever since then…I’ve been feeling irritation down there even though I’ve washed. It’s been like 4 days now.

admin answers:

You’re right, your vagina does cleanse itself by flushing out harmful bacteria, dirt, dead cells etc. And it’s slightly acidic pH helps kill off anything nasty…

If you’ve washed then it may not be the sand and other nasties from the beach – but, although the vagina does self-clean it can only do so much, it can take time for it to recover after it’s had something nasty inside it, so it may be a little under the weather for a few days. It may have brought on an infection, if worried then see a doctor to check for infections.
