How To Treat Bacterial Vaginosis

There is not one simple cause that causes bacterial vaginosis. Since there are many different types of bacteria that live in the vagina, any type of imbalance of harmful bacteria in the vagina can cause this infection, a yeast infection or trichomoniasis. Even though there researchers are unable to determine one simple cause, they have suggested there can be several different things that can still cause this infection. Such as: douching, not using a condom during sexual intercourse, multiple sex partners as well as an intrauterine device for birth control.

In a lot of cases this infection has been known to go away on its own. It’s been estimated that around 50%-75% of women have recorded either no signs or no symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. But if treatment is needed, your doctor may prescribe you with antibiotics or a vaginal cream or gel. In order to determine if you have this infection, your doctor may take a vaginal sample and test it.

However, there are different ways to help prevent bacterial vaginosis. You can do things like: Wiping from front to back, no douching, keeping the vaginal area clean. Avoid wearing tight clothes, avoid scented or treated toilet paper that also includes scented feminine hygiene products and always remember to practice safe sex.

It’s been said that women who have this infection and are also pregnant have a higher risk of delivering a premature baby, infection of amniotic fluid and infection of the uterus after delivery. Screening and treatment is recommended to women who have a history of preterm birth.

Although it is known that this type of infection can resolve on its own and even if treated, it’s known to have no complications. In some cases bacterial vaginosis is known to disappear on it’s own as well. However if treatment is needed, your doctor will in most cases take a sample of the vaginal discharge to test it to determine if you do have this type of infection. If it’s proven that you do, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help clear up the infection, there are also vaginal creams and gels that can be used.
