Well technically they are called “STI’s” now for “sexually transmitted infections.” While it IS technically considered an STI, I don’t think it would qualify as an STD because for the most part they do not have any symptoms. The reason they changed the name to STI is because it is more encompassing, including infections that may be asymptomatic.

Another name for this is bacterial vaginosis…It is totally nothing at all to be worried about, it’s not an STI like gonorrhea or chlamydia, it’s actually fairly common and equivalent to the severity of a yeast infection or a bladder infection. If there are no symptoms it usually does not require treatment.

admin answers:

Im not a doctor, but i can clearly see your not getting any straight forward answers.

Gardnerella Vaginalis is an infection of the female genital tract by bacteria of the Gardnerella vaginalis strain, often in combination with various anaerobic bacteria. Also called bacterial vaginosis.

It is not clear whether bacterial vaginosis is sexually transmitted (as you mentioned) but it can be associated with other sexually transmitted diseases. It is more common in women with multiple sexual partners and it often develops soon after intercourse with a new partner. Bacterial vaginosis is relatively common among women with female partners, where the condition may be triggered by the insertion of fingers or shared sex toys.

There is no condition equivalent to bacterial vaginosis in men. Bacterial vaginosis can occur in monogamous relationships, and it can occur even when the woman’s partners always use condoms.

So, it seems that a sexual partner doesn’t “give” a woman bacterial vaginosis, but it occurs as a result of sexual contact.

Help!! Question about Medical Insurance?

My wife had surgery a year ago to get rid of endometriosis, a very common feminine problem. She decided to leave her job afterwards, so we lost our insurance benefits. We are trying to get on insurance now, and my wife has been denied because of the operation. I currently have insurance at Kaiser Permanente. I would like my wife on my plan, but they denied her when we both applied, but they allowed me to join. How do I get her on insurance? Is there any advice or resources that anyone can refer us to? Thank you.
We are both 24.

admin answers:

They see the surgery as a pre-existing condition. Meaning (they think) she is going to have to keep having problems with the endometriosis and they’re going to have to keep paying. If health insurance companies can save money and backstab the little guy, they do. Sorry. Save money to pay cash for doctor’s appt.s also, if you cant get health insurance for her and she does get sick my advice (and what alot of people do) is to go to the Emergency room. They don’t make you pay up front and will also work out a payment plan with you. Hope this helps. Give it some time and they might not see it as a pre-exsiting condition as long as she doesn’t have anymore problems with it.

Bacterial vaginosis is vaginal condition that can produce vaginal discharge and results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. In the past, the condition was called Gardnerella vaginitis, after the bacteria that were thought to cause the condition. However, the newer name, bacterial vaginosis, reflects the fact that there are a number of species of bacteria that naturally live in the vaginal area and may grow to excess. The Gardnerella organism is not the sole culprit causing the symptoms. When these multiple species of bacteria become imbalanced, a woman can have a vaginal discharge with a foul odor.

Symptoms of Vaginal Bacterial Vaginosis

The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are vaginal discharge and odor. Usually, there are no other symptoms. The amount of vaginal discharge that is considered normal varies from woman to woman. Therefore, any degree of vaginal discharge that is abnormal for a particular woman should be evaluated.

Many women with bacterial vaginosis actually have no symptoms at all. Others experience an unpleasant fishy odor with vaginal discharge. The discharge is usually thin and grayish white. The discharge is often more noticeable after sexual intercourse.

Causes of Bacterial Vaginosis

The main cause of bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of vaginal anaerobic bacteria and the Gardnerella organism. Generally in the vaginal area there are more Lactobacillus bacteria than bad bacteria like Gardnerella Vaginalis and Mobiluncus. When the number of bad bacteria increases in vaginal area, they upset the balance and this imbalance causes <a rel="nofollow"" href="http://bit.ly/BVMiracle" target="_blank">bacterial vaginosis.

Home Remedies for Vaginal Bacterial Vaginosis

1. Tea tree oil is also helpful in getting rid of bacteria. Put few drops in the bath water and then rub it around one’s vaginal area.

2. Apple cider vinegar is also very good. One can put about one or two cups into the bath water and soak it for about 20 minutes. The vinegar helps in getting rid of the vaginal discharge.

3. One can have cranberry juice as well as yoghurt everyday.

4. For about few minutes everyday place some cold tea bags near one’s vaginal area as well as surrounding areas.

5. Tracheal herb tea is also very beneficial. Take tracheal herbal supplements.

6. Have garlic supplements or ingest more of it in your food to ingest antibacterial properties.

7. One can mix triphala powder with some water.

8. One can also apply lavender oil on the vaginal area. The lavender oil can be diluted with olive oil.

9. A boric acid douche on the vaginal area also helps.

10. A vinegar douche that is mixing about 1 tablespoonful of vinegar in warm water also is beneficial.

11. Betadine is also a very good anti- iodine solution.

12. Gentian violet happens to be quite effective antifungal stain. But this must not be used by women who are pregnant and suffering from bacterial vaginosis.

13. One can go in for homeopathy treatment.

14. Antioxidants in vitamins such as A, C D as well as E are useful Vitamin B Complex is also very good.

15. A warm bath is also very good being careful to avoid bubble bath and scented oils.

16. One can make use of cold compresses.

sometimes it can disappear without any form of vaginosis treatment. But if this type of vaginitis which is also known as Bacterial Vaginosis doesn’t clear up, there are several different vaginosis treatment options available.

Natural Vaginosis Treatment

A natural vaginosis treatment is usually less expensive that prescriptions and will definitely save you time and discomfort. Think about it – the obvious ones are – no more doctor visits, no more trips to the pharmacy, no more itching and burning and that awful discharge. While it is important to relieve the symptoms with a vaginosis treatment, you need to be sure that you are not just masking them. Garlic one of nature’s natural remedies is one of the best.

Garlic known for antibacterial and anti-fungal properties will eliminate the imbalance in the bacteria in the vagina with 1 or 2 capsules every day until your symptoms disappear. A vaginosis treatment that can be used is: Tracheal, or one of these other natural ingredients – tea tree oil, olive leaf extract, golden-seal and colloidal silver. Natural vaginosis treatment comes in many different forms, with some you will take capsules, others you will apply topically and still others will be a tea that you drink. Don’t dismiss their effectiveness because of their simplicity.

It is still very important that you have the proper diagnosis and the best way to be sure is to have your medical provider examine you and order some tests. These tests can include: an oligonucleotide probes test, a Whiff test, gram stain, vaginal pH level or wet mount. A vaginal discharge sample can be tested to see if you have bacterial vaginosis. Once confirmed that you have BV, your medical provider may prescribe antibiotics or vaginal creams and gels. Be aware that the prescriptions are shown to relieve the symptoms right away, but do not remove bacterial vaginosis.

There are life style changes that can support you to remain free from BV, along with the bacterial vaginosis treatment

Studies Of Recurrent Vaginosis

46 women studied in Israel and published in the Archives of Family Medicine in Chicago, showed that yogurt offers relief. The women in the study ate 5 oz of yogurt daily containing live bacteria. At the end of the study it was shown that the woman who ate the yogurt had 66% less cases of recurrent vaginosis. The yogurt contained live lactobacillus acidophilus and was the first such study to prove positive results by changing dietary habits.

The idea behind the study of recurrent vaginosis and the live bacteria in yogurt was the belief that the yogurt would protect against further recurrent vaginosis infection by maintaining an acidic environment in the vagina or produce naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide that kills harmful bacteria.

Naturopathic suppository for recurrent vaginosis

It is not well know but naturopathic doctors provide gynecological treatments, especially when they are not serious and are typically recurrent vaginosis. These can be successfully treated with a natural herbal suppository, which consists of boric acid powdered, combined with antifungals like calendula and barberry. Occasionally garlic suppositories are used to kill the bacteria, as it is one of nature’s own antibiotics. The suppository is inserted in the vagina and allowed to dissolve naturally usually overnight using a pad for leak protection. Recurrent vaginosis usually responds well.

So how can you tell if you are suffering from recurrent vaginosis often called bacterial vaginosis, or a yeast infection, chlamydiae, gonorrhea, fungi such as Candida , trichomonas vaginalis, or a virus such as human papillomavirus and herpesvirus? You can’t. It is very important in the first stages of recurrent vaginosis that you go to your medical professional an have a pelvic exam and some tests done to determine what is going on.

Home remedies can be very effective with recurrent vaginosis, but not with most of the others. You would be allowing the disease to progress without treatment if you were using remedies for a bacterial infection when it is something more serious.

Common symptoms of recurrent vaginosis

The most common symptom of recurrent vaginosis is the discharge, especially in large amounts with a strong fishy odor. It can be white to gray, thin to watery accompanied by itching, swelling and soreness. If it is thicker say like cottage cheese, varies in color from yellow to green or even blood-tinged then it is not recurrent vaginosis and you should see your medical professional as soon as you can.

With recurrent vaginosis the foul odor will become more pronounced after sexual activity, or washing with soap both of which tends to reduce the acidity in the vagina. Long hot bubble baths can also alter the ph in the vagina and should be stopped until you have the recurrent vaginosis under control. Other irritants that increase the imbalance in the vagina, leading to recurrent vaginosis include … spermicides, lubricants, condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps and sponges, laundry soaps and fabric softeners – even the dryer sheets, deodorant sprays and soaps, douching, tight non porous nonabsorbent underpants, and finally wiping procedures after a bowel movement (i.e., back to front dragging some of the fecal material to the vagina.)

Lifestyle changes are required if you want to be free from recurrent vaginosis. Once you are treating the symptoms you can begin slowly to change your behaviors to ensure that you will not be troubled again by recurrent vaginosis.

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

Bacterial vaginosis symptoms can lead to a great deal of embarrassment and sometimes discomfort for women who have Bacteria Vaginosis (BV). It is also important to note that not all women who have BV experience symptoms. The symptoms of BV can also vary in severity and intensity from woman-to-woman and case-to-case.

The 5 Most Common Symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis

A fishy vaginal odor

Irregular vaginal discharge

Vaginal itching

Vaginal irritation

Cramping

The 2 Most Common Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

Of these five, the two most common bacterial vaginosis symptoms, and most embarrassing, are the unpleasant, fishy vaginal odor and more frequent vaginal discharge. Both of these bacterial vaginosis symptoms are the result of an abnormal bacterial change that takes place in the vagina, the root cause of bacteria vaginosis.

The vaginal discharge can typically be anywhere from white to gray in appearance and may look similar to milk. Most women find that the discharge becomes especially abnormal after sexual intercourse.

Vaginal itching, irritation, and cramping are the three least common bacterial vaginosis symptoms, but they can create a lot of discomfort for those women who do experience them. As has been noted, these symptoms can vary in intensity, ranging from mild to severe. They can also vary from one experience to another in the same woman, often it depends on the degree of imbalance in the bacteria and PH in the vagina.

Sometimes the symptom of vaginal itching can lead sufferers of BV to a wrong self-diagnosis, confusing bacterial vaginosis symptoms for yeast infection symptoms. It has also led some health professionals to the same misdiagnosis. So it is important to take note of and pay attention to all the symptoms you may be experiencing if you believe you have an abnormal vaginal condition.

If you are experiencing any of these bacterial vaginosis symptoms it may be important to take action. First you should seek a diagnosis from a health care professional, so that you are clear that you do have bacterial vaginosis symptoms. In many cases bacteria vaginosis is simply an inconvenience and embarrassment, yet, it can also lead to serious health risks. The bottom line is BV can be a frustrating nuisance and much more. Women should do their best to be aware of the bacterial vaginosis symptoms, take note of the causes of BV, and seek a good treatment option when necessary.

Natural Remedies Can Help With Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

Often the medical professional will prescribe antibiotics which will treat the bacterial vaginosis symptoms and many women find immediate relief. The problem is that the medicine further imbalances the normal bacteria and PH in the vagina. Often it is important to continue with natural remedies to be sure that BV does not reoccur.

Self Diagnosing Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

Bacterial Vaginosis symptoms are very easily self-diagnosed, but you should still take a visit to your doctor’s office to be checked out fully. There is nothing worse than uncertainty when it comes to an unhealthy vagina. The mind can wonder and can shred your nerves worrying about what STD, cancer or ailment you might have. A self-diagnosis should never be preferred over a doctor visit. Ladies, I strongly suggest go to your doctor and get checked out if you expirience any kind of weird symptoms or behavior from your vagina.

Problem is that most women feel incredibly uncomfortable sitting in a doctors office while he/she probes around your naked body. It’s unnerving and very embarrassing having another person be around your “smelly” vagina, let alone someone you just met 5 minutes ago. So what can you do? You can search online for possible symptoms for your ailment, such as possible bacterial vaginosis symptoms (bacterial vaginitis).

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms – The Top 3

1. Fish-like odor.

2. Thin, milky discharge, usually white or light gray in color.

3. Itchiness or Discomfort.

These bacterial vaginosis symptoms are just a handful of the possible complications that BV can cause. They are usually intensified during and after sex. Bacterial Vaginosis is not a STD, but studies have shown that women with multiple or new sex partners are far more likely to contract it. Part of the understanding is that bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance in the PH in the vagina, if your partner has a diet high in sugar, bread, beer for example there is the danger that the PH balance will be disturbed.

There are many ways to cure your bacterial vaginosis. You basically have two options, self-treatment, or going to a doctor. I prefer natural self-treatment because it is highly inexpensive compared to a doctor visit, and you can learn quite a bit about your body along the way. You should never be afraid to consult your doctor.

I struggled with bacterial vaginosis for 3 years. Doctors kept prescribing antibiotics, (clindamycin phosphate, tinidazole and metronidazole), and nothing seemed to work! It just kept coming back over and over again. I was so shocked when I found out that antibiotics actually weakened my body’s natural defense against infections!

Natural Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

When I was at my wit’s end, I stumbled upon a Natural Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment. It taught me everything I would ever need to know and how to use my body to naturally cure BV for good. Needless to say, it cleared my BV up in 3 days, and it hasn’t returned yet!

Do you think you are pregnant? Take a test.

All girls have a normal white/clear wet mucous discharge as the vagina is self-cleaning. A change in discharge is not a symptom of pregnancy. The amount and consistency can vary due to water intake, diet, exercise, medication, hormones, illness….

The flagyl should help you feel better in 3-5 days. MAKE sure you do not consume any alcohol while on that med, it will make you very nauseous.

So not have any sexual contact while on the med, you can transmit this back and forth even though it is not technically an STD.

Another med you could take would be clindesse vaginal cream, you only have to use it once (is RX) at bedtime and you would not have to worry about the nausea.

Hope this helps.

If you have any other questions on this that I did not answer, look at WEBMD.com, it has accurate medical info.

Bacterial vaginosis?

I was wondering if anyone has ever had bacterial vaginosis and what your symptoms were. I thought I had a yeast infection, so I took medication, but it has not gone away. I also figured out that it wasn’t intense itching as a yeast infection is (i’ve had one before), just irritated and a twitch here and there. Could this be BV?
I’m not sexually active, so it cant be an STD

I don’t know exactly what is going on down there, but you should make an appointment with your OB /GYN tomorrow. You shouldn’t live with irritaiton and left untreated BV can lead to a whole host of other problems.

Good luck!

Can bacterial vaginosis cause a burning feeling in the clitoris and just beneath it?

I have been having a burning feeling inside the inner labia just under the clitoris. It sometimes looks a little red and sometimes it does not. I recently took Diflucan and that didn’t help. Now I am noticing a slightly thick, milky discharge. I’m starting to wonder if it could be bacterial vaginosis. Would BV cause burning in the clitoral area without causing burning in and around the vagina?

admin answers:

BV has a very distinct, unpleasant odor and burns. If it’s near the clitoris and just under it, that could very likely be from a bladder infection (that’s where your urethra is). However, if that was the case you’d have pain when urinating. My best advice is to see a health care professional and get a proper diagnosis so you can treat the condition and get rid of it. To state the obvious, there should be no discomfort, burning, itching or discharge in a normal healthy vagina.

Can bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection affect my ability or orgasm?

Can bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection affect my ability or orgasm?
I recently got over a bout of pneumonia. The antibiotics I had to take gave me a yeast infection (i think). I have a history of bacterial vaginosis and this is also something I’m considering. I am not sure which it is, but I realized I no longer can have an orgasm. I plan to go see my gyno, but this isn’t something I would ask him.

admin answers:

This is something you SHOULD ask your GYN. It’s relevant and he would know the answer better than most of the people here.

Bacterial vaginosis is usually caused by bacteria entering your vagina, perhaps from a lover that doesn’t keep his penis or hands clean. Or you touching yourself with unclean hands.

Stressing about having bacterial vaginosis can cause you to not have orgasms. Talk to your GYN. Relax. Your orgasms should come back.

You can have BV again. Or, you could have an STD related discharge coincidental to your recent sexual activity. To be sure you should visit your local health care professional and have it tested.

Being treated for BV..symptoms still occuring?

Hi..i went to the gyno almost a week ago with the symptoms of a little discharge and a smelly odor down there. I was given the bacterial and yeast infection test, which came back a day later that i had a bacterial infection. I also got the Chlamydia/Gonnorhea pap..but they said the results would take up to 5 days..i will call tomorrow to check on the results.

So, i’ve been on Metradizole(sp?) for the bacterial infection for 4 or 5 days, i still have 3 days worth of dosages left…yet I still have discharge and a slight odor, it’s not as strong but it is there. Is it possible that i may have something else along with the BV?? Or do i just need to wait until i finish the medication?

I will call about the other test tomorrow though, i’m just wondering in advance:]

Also, does this have anything to do with the fact that i have reoccuring BV?

Maybe you just have a particularly strong case of BV & will get relief in the next few days… or perhaps you will need a second treatment, the doctor will let you know (also if its another infection too)

do i really have to finish all the antibiotics prescribed if symptoms improve already?

jsut want to add that they symptoms weren’t severe to begin with. she prescribed only the gel last time, now she’s including so many pills along with the gel…how do we know it takes the full 7 days to get rid of bacteria?

Absolutely it is necessary for you to finish them. If you do not then you take a risk of acquiring a much more severe infection the next time as you are allowing the bacteria to become resistant by not completely getting rid of them.

Are these symptoms Thrush, BV or something else?

Im not sure whether this is thrush or BV.
I had strong, cloudy urine and it was sore when i had sex. I was told(by tests) i had thrush, got treated for it and was told it was gone but i still had some symptoms then got told it was bv, took antibiotics which stopped my pee smelling and pain but this came back after about 2 days of finishing the antibiotics.
My urine does not smell all the time now but still is abit cloudy and it hurts when i have sex, my urine also always smells very strongly and cloudy after sex. i don’t have any obviously white and thick discharge, its thin and clear but there seems to be alot so im not sure what i have anymore i’ve been tested for everything else; urine tests, stds. and they came back clear.
