Feminine Odor… if not infection then what?

I have never had a concern about my female area smelling badly before but a few months ago I suddenly noticed that I was getting a stronger smell down there. Within a week or two it became so strong that I felt as though others could smell it when they were around me. I know I could smell it all day no matter what I tried to do to help it!
I went to my dr. and asked. Was tested for STD’s, bacterial infection, and yeast infection. Nothing came up suspicious. Please help! Its not going away and the only time I get relief from the embarrassing odor is during my period!

Women can, indeed develop an odor even if there is no infection. It can be caused by a pH imbalance that allows the bacteria which cause odor to have an easier time growing. It can also be cause by a number of natural causes.

Over douching- or not douching at all, sexual intercourse, and post period retained menstrual blood can be contributors. Using some of the feminine cleansers from China have been found to contain either too alkaline or too acidic a vaginal cleanser, worsening the problem. Fortunately, the best douches are homemade and lots cheaper.

Ask your doctor what solution he/she thinks is best to douche with. Some like a light vinegar solution or vinegar and salt ( just a small amount to make saline) There are also prepared powders like one called Trichotene (that tends to remind one of what Listerine smells like) to put in a douche to rinse yourself inside and out with. RESTRAINT with douching is important. Do not exceed what your doctor recommends.

Wash the exterior of your body – the inner and outer labia with a gentle cleanser such as dial antibacterial soap & water or even keep some baby wipes with you for use every time you are on the toilet. Cleanse gently inside and outside each of the lips.

Don’t wear any tight pants, DO wear all cotton crotch panties, and you may find a panti liner helps, but change it often. The idea is to keep yourself as dry as possible in your peri & vaginal area.

Keep your doctor apprised of any changes. Watch for any changes in mucous and report these. Avoid tampons completely until this is resolved 100%.

Good luck!

You can douche with half water, half hydrogen peroxide because the natural bacteria in your vagina produces hydrogen peroxide. (cool huh?) Megadoses of vitamin C seems to be helpful. YOu can take as many grams as it takes to bring you to the brink of diarrhea. Www.doctoryourself.com. I just found this site and I’m trying the vitamin C myself….These two things have seemed to almost stop my symptoms…..I just started the vitamin C and I’m hopeful. I’ve tried the tea tree oil and it just manages the symptoms. You can spend much money trying to find the right natural cure for you. I”m hopeful this is going to work for me.
For the past few days I’ve been getting a lot of weird almost yellow discharge, but it doesn’t smell. Also I am very itchy down there and its a little sore on the outside. I was wondering whether this is a yeast infection or a bacterial infection? I don’t know which it could be. I have been wearing thongs and pantyliners for the past week so I guess that’s why I’m having this problem.
Its a vaginal infection called BV or bacterial vaginosis. There are a few medications ( I have used metro gel) IT happens, it doesn’t mean you are gross or dirty. Sometimes sweat , bacteria or wearing thongs can push bacteria ad germs into your area…. So it is something that is common and treatable.

Remember Yeast is thick , kinda gooey, mucus looking.. Doesn’t smell…

Bacteria Vaginosis.. Is more of a sticky smelly discharge.

You can check webmd.com and look some stuff up on the internet. You can find home cures and natural remedies to a lot of stuff. There are a lot of natural choices out there, and it has been found that the traditional medical solutions do not always work, because BV tends to reoccur often as the antibiotics that are prescribed only work as long as you take it. The long term solution naturally can be found here … http://bit.ly/BVMiracle

There is no quick, simple answer. Bacterial Vaginosis is perfectly treatable with lots of natural remedies like Acidophilus. But you need to be persistent, because the main problem with BV is how quickly it can reoccur. Regardless, it is always wise to check with your ob-gyn or family doctor.

Bacterial Vaginosis is often confused with yeast infections. The main differences include: BV generally does not itch, the type of discharge is very different. BV’s discharge can be white to dull gray and sometimes thick, almost always with a foul fishy odor. Yeast infections on the other hand are often itchy and any discharge is colorless and most often odorless.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned this, but Probiotics work wonderfully to fight yeast overgrowths. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in your intestinal tract among other places and they help to defend against bad bacteria and growths. It’s very common to get more yeast infections after an antibiotic regimen because the antibiotic kills off the Probiotics as well.

If you take a high potency Probiotic (at least a few different strains and at least 20-30 billion viable organisms if not more), that should help to push the yeast back quickly and keep it at bay. After a month or so of that regimen, it should have repopulated the good bacteria enough that you could take a maintenance Probiotic (2-5 billion organisms of a few strains) to help keep the bad stuff away.
I have heard of some people that like to put yogurt right in the area to get the Probiotics in it right to the yeast, but that is messy and yogurt doesn’t have anywhere near the quantity of Probiotics as a supplement would have.

One thing to note is that whenever you go from no Probiotics in your diet to a larger dose of them, it’s common to have some loose stools for the first day or two… but that tapers off within the first couple days. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Most herbs are not recommended during pregnancy. But you could try Garlic:

Often called ‘nature’s antibiotic’, this sure cure for a number of ailments, is effective against bacterial vaginosis too, because of its strong antibacterial properties. It can be taken both orally or vaginally. A peeled whole garlic clove, wrapped in gauze, can be inserted into the vagina. It can also be used as douches or in suppository form. This herb also prevents bacterial vaginosis recurrence.

Good Luck!

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria within the vagina. It can be difficult to isolate the exact causes of why this has happened and this is why conventional treatment concentrates on treating the symptoms rather than the causes. Home remedies for bacterial vaginosis can be very effective as they tend to concentrate on eliminating the root causes.

Under normal circumstances, a healthy vagina contains a variety of bacteria, the most important of which is Lactobacillus. This helps to maintain a slightly acidic environment which prevents the growth of harmful bacteria. There can be a number of reasons why Lactobacillus decreases, but the result is always an overgrowth in harmful bacteria, causing the typical symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. Although not initially dangerous, if left untreated , bacterial vaginosis can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease or even infertility.

Bacterial vaginosis is very common and affects between 10 and 60% of the female population at any one time. Typical symptoms include a gray or white watery discharge, a very unpleasant fishy vaginal odor and unbearable itching and burning.

Conventional medication will usually include antibiotics, which can help to kill off harmful bacteria but unfortunately, as they do not treat the root cause, it is highly likely that the condition will recur. In addition, antibiotics do not discriminate between good or bad bacteria and so this leaves the vagina very vulnerable to further infection.

Home remedies for bacterial vaginosis often include the use of tea tree oil, cider vinegar and probiotic yogurt.

* Tea tree oil- this is a powerful antibacterial substance and a few drops can be added to a warm bath. Alternatively, tea tree oil pessaries can be bought from health food stores

* Cider vinegar- as the normally acidic conditions within the vagina are usually lowered when you have BV, cider vinegar can help to restore balance. Add a couple of cups to a bath and sit in it for around 20 minutes

* Probiotic yogurt- The bacteria within this yogurt are the same as those found within a healthy vagina. Try dipping a tampon in the yogurt and leaving it in place in the vagina for a couple of hours

Although these tips will help, to be completely sure of getting rid of BV, it is important to eliminate all the possible causes. A natural treatment will help strengthen the immune system, giving the body the ability to fight and kill the bad bacteria present in the vagina. There are three excellent treatments, all of which are completely guaranteed to work not only to give fast relief, but to stop the condition permanently. If you are one of the many thousands of women who have recurrent attacks, then this is absolutely vital.

Don’t despair though-these treatments will work even if you can’t seem to shake off bacterial vaginosis.

Medical Treatments For Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common bacterial infection affecting up to 30% of women. Symptoms appear in only 20-30% of women affected with BV, and can mimic the symptoms of other infections, such as yeast infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Itching, grayish discharge, and a fishy odor are the most common symptoms of BV. In some women, a mild fever or burning upon urination may occur, leading many women to believe they have a bladder infection.

Diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis must be done by a doctor, to rule out any other diseases that can cause the same symptoms. A pelvic exam, cell culture, and Pap smear will likely be done to aid in the diagnosis. Once diagnosis is made, treatments for bacterial vaginosis include oral antibiotics and vaginal gels or suppositories. Side effects vary depending on the treatment chosen, but the most common side effects are nausea, upset stomach, and secondary yeast infections.

The Most Common Treatments For Bacterial Vaginosis

The most common treatments for bacterial vaginosis are oral antibiotics, namely Tinidazol. Infections that do not respond to Tinidazol may be treated with metronidazole (also known as Flagyl), in either oral or gel form. Oral metronidazole is considered the most effective treatment, although it is the most likely to cause side effects. Vaginal gels are usually used in patients who have negative side effects to oral medication, or for those who cannot swallow pills.

Bacterial vaginosis may also be treated with a vaginal cream (Cleocin) in patients who do not respond to other treatments. While effective in treating bacterial vaginosis, vaginal clindamycin cream may cause severe yeast overgrowth, so many doctors will also prescribe medication to treat yeast infections along with bacterial vaginosis.

Alternative Treatments for Bacterial Vaginosis

While your doctor’s prescription will undoubtedly relieve the majority of the unpleasant symptoms from BV, it will not prevent bacterial vaginosis from recurring. It is very important to use treatments for bacterial vaginosis that will deal with the cause of BV, namely an imbalance in the PH of the vagina. When the “good” bacteria is over run by the “bad” bacteria infection occurs and the more acid bacteria continues to grow. So that even though the medication did remove the symptoms, the medication itself is one of the causes of BV. Antibiotics are known for killing the bacteria. A healthy vagina requires bacteria – just in the appropriate PH levels. Other causes include – semen (often semen is much more acidic than the vagina), bubble baths, over the counter douches with “odor eliminating” agents, and clothing that is too tight and presses on the sensitive labia.

Natural treatments for bacterial vaginosis can include supplementing your diet with cranberry juice or concentrated capsules. Garlic, nature’s wonder drug is also very helpful in removing the infection and aiding the body to re-balance the PH levels. Yogurt has been used successfully to repopulate the vagina with “good” bacteria. For more information see my review of BV Miracle

Although bacterial vaginosis is not dangerous in itself, it has been shown to cause premature birth in some pregnant women, so routine screening for BV is standard in pregnancy. BV has also been known to cause infections in newborns who are exposed to it during birth, but the infection is usually mild and has no long term consequences for most healthy infants.

During and after any treatments for bacterial vaginosis, keeping the vaginal area clean and dry is important to prevent recurring infections. Infection may recur despite your best efforts, but practicing good hygiene during and after treatment is essential. Sexual activity during treatment may cause reinfection, so using a condom or avoiding sex altogether during treatment is a good idea. Avoid the use of douches, vaginal deodorants, and over-the-counter vaginal gels during treatment.

You are not alone, many women suffer from this common condition. And now you have found the source for treatments for bacterial vaginosis – so since you have the information you need – take action and finally be free of BV!

With numbers this high it is no surprise that women are always looking for a list of common vaginosis symptoms. Below I have listed the 4 most common signs of BV.

The first sign and the most noticeable will be a white and grey vaginal discharge. This discharge will always accomany bacterial vaginosis , it may on occasion have a yellowish tinge as well but primarily you will see white and grey.

The second sign and the one complained about most is a fishy vaginal odour, this is considered on of the most unpleasant signs.

The third sign is a stronger fishy odour than the second sign after intercourse. This is the most embarrassing sign as this is often noticed by more than just you.

The fourth sign is not as common but still a cause for concern if it happens is vaginal itching and painful intercourse. If you experience these than you certainly want to get checked out.

It is very important that women know the signs of BV, not detecting and treating BV can lead to complications down the road. This is especially important if you are pregnant, bacterial vaginosis can cause complications such as premature rupture of your water causing preterm labour.

It is paramount that women know the vaginosis symptoms so that they will be able to determine if they have to get it confirmed by a doctor. Besides the obvious discomfort that comes with BV there are possible long term issue than can develop from untreated BV.

There is not one simple cause that causes bacterial vaginosis. Since there are many different types of bacteria that live in the vagina, any type of imbalance of harmful bacteria in the vagina can cause this infection, a yeast infection or trichomoniasis. Even though there researchers are unable to determine one simple cause, they have suggested there can be several different things that can still cause this infection. Such as: douching, not using a condom during sexual intercourse, multiple sex partners as well as an intrauterine device for birth control.

In a lot of cases this infection has been known to go away on its own. It’s been estimated that around 50%-75% of women have recorded either no signs or no symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. But if treatment is needed, your doctor may prescribe you with antibiotics or a vaginal cream or gel. In order to determine if you have this infection, your doctor may take a vaginal sample and test it.

However, there are different ways to help prevent bacterial vaginosis. You can do things like: Wiping from front to back, no douching, keeping the vaginal area clean. Avoid wearing tight clothes, avoid scented or treated toilet paper that also includes scented feminine hygiene products and always remember to practice safe sex.

It’s been said that women who have this infection and are also pregnant have a higher risk of delivering a premature baby, infection of amniotic fluid and infection of the uterus after delivery. Screening and treatment is recommended to women who have a history of preterm birth.

Although it is known that this type of infection can resolve on its own and even if treated, it’s known to have no complications. In some cases bacterial vaginosis is known to disappear on it’s own as well. However if treatment is needed, your doctor will in most cases take a sample of the vaginal discharge to test it to determine if you do have this type of infection. If it’s proven that you do, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help clear up the infection, there are also vaginal creams and gels that can be used.

This is dangerous as lack of treatment enhances a woman’s risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), cervicitis, pregnancy complications, endometritis and post-operative infections among other health conditions.

Bacterial Vaginosis – Who requires Treatment?

Bacterial Vaginosis treatment is not necessary when the bacteria are present in the vagina. But treatment is required in the following cases:

When the woman has symptoms or the physician discovers signs of bacterial vaginosis

When the women is about to undergo a medical procedure which might lead to further intake of bacteria into the uterus

When the woman is pregnant

Bacterial Vaginosis – Oral and Vaginal Medication

Oral or vaginal Metronidazole for continuous period of 7-days is the first choice of oral medication for treating bacterial vaginosis. These antibiotic medicines can be applied in the vaginal area as vaginal cream and gel or taken as a pill. Oral medicines are used to treat pregnant women who bear high-risk for pre-term labor. Metronidazole, Tinidazole, and Clindamycin are antibiotics that destroy bacteria responsible for bacterial vaginosis. All of these three antibiotics offer average cure rates of 80% to 90%. The vaginal medications are less likely to cause nausea and vomiting, unlike oral medication.

For bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends application of clindamycin cream 2% for a period of seven days and 4 weeks of vaginal Metronidazole gel treatment. Metronidazole id thought to be the safest to use during pregnancy.

Other Stunning Treatments – Other than Metronidazole

The following set of medicines is not as effective as Metronidazole, but they certainly have fewer side effects:

Tinidazole – these tablets can be taken as a single dose. The side effects are as few and elementary as Metronidazole

Miconazole – Also known as Monistat, these are effective to reduce vaginal thrush and also bacterial vaginitis. You can get this without producing any prescription. Insert one pessary each night for 7 nights

Aci-jel – a vaginal cream that is effective in altering the acidity of vagina, thereby reducing the multiple growths of bacterial vaginosis organisms. This cream is also available from pharmacies without a prescription.
